In this piece, we take issue with prevailing skepticism about the state. We argue that state provision is about creating the preconditions for relationships of equality, not just about transfers of resources, and that a powerful, big state that is democratic in its procedures and fosters a culture of institutional respect for all its citizens can be close to its citizens and empower them to live lives without domination or oppression. We illustrate this by looking at three policy areas: housing, work and industrial policy, and the provision of childcare.
